Counseling Parents in Child Support Cases

The child support system in New York State ensures that children are getting the level of financial support required, while taking into consideration what both parents can afford. Whether you are concerned about paying or receiving child support, an attentive and knowledgeable lawyer can help.

At the law firm of Anthony E. Core, P.C., we represent Long Island parents in cases involving the determination, modification and enforcement of child support. For a free consultation with an experienced family law attorney, contact us today.

Understanding the Support Laws

In New York, a parent's child support obligation will be calculated according to the New York State Child Support Standards Act (CSSA). Our experienced family law attorneys can explain the appropriate calculation to you, as well as identify unique circumstances which may warrant a reasonable deviation from such calculation.

Child support determinations are often made during divorce, but unmarried parents can also petition for a child support order from the court. Children have the same rights to their parents' financial support no matter what their marital status.

If you have an informal arrangement with your child's other parent, a child support order can put that arrangement in writing so it is enforceable and allow you to use the collection services offered by the state Support Collection Unit (SCU).

Addressing Your Child Support Concerns

When calculating child support under the guidelines, it is important to make sure the correct information is being used. Determining the income of a parent who is self-employed or works irregular hours can be particularly tricky, especially if he or she is being deliberately dishonest.

Child support orders may also be subject to modification when circumstances change, so if you are concerned that you are paying too much or not receiving enough based on your current circumstances, we can help you determine whether a modification would be appropriate.

Don't hesitate to contact us to discuss any questions or concerns you may have about child support in New York.
